SONNET I LEGACY
SAUVEREIGN’s SONNET I Legacy features the penmanship of the maison’s artist and founder Bertrand Mak, reciting one of William Shakespeare’s most celebrated love poems, “Sonnet 116.” Made in solid 18-carat yellow gold, the Gem is casted, scrupulously hand-carved, and polished by a prestigious goldsmith in Geneva, Switzerland. Interweaving, imbricating, protruding, and removed, the depicted text appears as if seared into or levitating from the surface. Comprising engravings of six varied depths and skeletonised, SONNET I is reminiscent of a personal diary – within it, immortalising an affection that bears the weight of time.
From Ink to Gold
Transcribed using various fountain pens with different nibs, the pattern recalls the artist’s early experience of writing lines from Shakespeare’s Macbeth – a form of disciplinary action traditional to Mak’s alma mater. Hidden within the composition are also illustrations by Mak, similar to those carved into love locks. Borrowing gravity from the playwright’s poetry, the overflowing reiteration within SONNET I evokes a yearning for the constancy of love, tender and intense. Finding his voice through a change in literature, Mak transforms penance into longing and repentance into reaffirmation.
